Mary Jane McLendon Wilkes, age 88, widow of William “Clevis” Wilkes, passed away peacefully, Friday, June 26, 2026 at her daughter’s home.
She was born on January 20, 1938 in Mount Vernon, Georgia and was the daughter of the late Isaac McLendon and Ethel Mae Spoon McLendon.
Mary retired from Whitten Center with 25 years of service. She was a member of Lydia Baptist Church and later attended Community Baptist Church. She and her husband spent their time taking care of their disabled daughter to keep her at home with them. Mary’s hobbies included crafts, cooking, crossword puzzles, music and reading. Although her favorite was cooking lunch every Sunday for her family.
Mary is survived by her daughter; Angela Cunningham (Jay); her brother James McLendon (Flo); her grandchildren, Brittany Allen, Daniel Cunningham (Makayla), Justin Cunningham (Heather); her pride and joy great-grandchildren, Gracie Cunningham, Brielle Allen, Cash Allen, Jase Cunningham, Rhett Cunningham, Mackenzly Wells, Karley Wells, Khloe Wells, Collin Wells.
In addition to her parents and husband of 56 years, Mary is preceded in death by her daughters; Tammy DeAnna Wilkes and Mona Carol Wilkes; her son, William C. Wilkes, Jr.; her sister, Betty Lou Medlin.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, June 29, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Clinton with Mr. Mark Wilkes officiating. Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the service.
