Joseph Hugh Allston died on April 13, 2015 at the age of 90. Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Hartsville, S.C. at 11:00 on Saturday, April 18, 2015 with visitation following the service. Born in Hartsville, S.C., he was the son of the late Joseph North Allston and Lillis McCollum Allston. He attended the Citadel and after World War II he graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1947 with a BS degree in civil engineering. During World War II, he served in the Pacific as an officer in the U.S. Navy Seabees. He helped build airfields on Okinawa and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for service in a combat zone. Mr. Allston was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hartsville for most of his life where he served as a deacon, treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent and President of the Men's Bible Class. He was a charter member of the Hartsville Kiwanis Club and a founding member of the Pee Dee Sailing Society. He served as a Director of the Bank of Hartsville, a Director of the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce, as a Scoutmaster and as President of the S.C. Automatic Merchandising Association. He was a Buick/Oldsmobile/Pontiac dealer for 25 years and owned and operated a food service business. At the time of his death, he lived at the Presbyterian Community in Clinton, S.C.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years June Reynolds Allston of Clinton; sons Joseph H. Allston of Camden and Stephen W. Allston (Zoe) of Lexington and daughter Aline A. Ferguson (Leland) of Blythewood; and grandchildren Samuel J. Ferguson of New York City and Amy A. Ferguson of Blythewood. He was predeceased by his sister Adele Allston King. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 213 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, S.C.
