James Madison Pitts, Sr. age 76 of 198 Burts Rd., passed away Tuesday, June 25th, 2013 at his home.
He was born in Newberry County and was a son of the late J. Milton and Hattie Rae Derrick Pitts.
Mr. Pitts retired from Laurens Glass Plant and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clinton, working with church missions and serving on the church Capital Campaign Committee. He was a veteran of the S.C. National Guard, a member of the Campbell Masonic Lodge #44 and the Hejaz Shrine Temple. For many years, Mr. Pitts proudly served on the Farm Bureau Board of Directors, at the local and state level as well as, the Farm Bureau Wildlife Sub-Committee, he also was a member of the Gideon’s and was the 2001 Laurens County Farm Family of the year.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Burts Pitts of the home; his children, Connie Smith of Columbia, Cathy Martin and husband, David of Laurens, Jim Pitts and wife, Kim of Clinton, Rosy Singal and husband, Paul of Chester; his brother, C. David Pitts of Clinton; sisters, Myrtle Longshore of Chappells, Patsy Nichols of Newberry, and Mamye Enlow of Chappells; grandchildren, Charleston Laffin (Travis), C. Madison Smith, Katie Forsyth (Garrett), Sgt. David Austin Martin, 6-8 Calvary Operation Enduring Freedom, Rebekah Pitts, Nikhil Singal, Neeraj Singal; and great-grandchildren, Chancellor Laffin, Lily Laffin, Charlie Laffin, Grayson Forsyth, and Ava Fridal.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his brother, Joe C. Pitts of the U.S. Virgin Islands and his son-in-law, Charles H. Smith.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 28th at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Clinton by Rev. Dr. Blake Harwell, with burial in Pinelawn Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends before the service from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 301 S. Broad Street, Clinton SC 29325 or Hospice of Laurens County, P.O. Box 178, Clinton SC, 29325.
