Horace Eugene Gambrell

Horace Eugene Gambrell, lovingly known by many as “Grumpy,” passed away peacefully on September 25, 2026. He was born on November 1, 1953, to the late William David and Harriette Ruth Walker Gambrell.

Horace was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, sibling, uncle, and friend. He was also deeply devoted to his church, Holly Grove Baptist Church, where his faith and church family held a special place in his heart.

Horace proudly served his country in the Army National Guard beginning in 1972. In 1974, he went on active duty and served with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He retired from the Michelin Test Track in Laurens SC in 2016 after many years of dedicated service.

After his retirement, Horace enjoyed spending his time woodworking and, most of all, picking nieces and nephews up from school and doing homework. Those were some of his most treasured times. Being there for his family and spending time with children brought him great joy. To those who loved him, he was more than just a husband, father, grandfather, and uncle—he was “Grumpy,” a name that came with a special kind of love and memories that will be treasured forever.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Deidra Howard Gambrell; his children, April Brown (Craig), Dena Moore (Brandon), and Lewis Gambrell (Shannon); and his nephew, Andy Howard (Kristen), whom he lovingly raised as his son.

He leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Amber Shue (Ryan Haag), Brooke Moore, Olivia Gambrell, Caleb Howard, and Abby Howard, along with many special nieces and nephews who held a treasured place in his heart. Among them was his special great-niece, Ava Hepburn, who lovingly called him “Poppy.” Their special bond was one that will be cherished forever.

Horace is also survived by his sisters, Becky Workman (Martin) and Margie Davis (Maxie), as well as his sisters-in-law, Linda Norris and Allison Howard.

Horace was predeceased by his parents, William David and Harriette Ruth Walker Gambrell; his brother, Billy Gambrell; and his brother-in-law, Robbie Howard.

A Memorial service with Military Honors will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026 at 4:00 pm at Holly Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Hines officiating.

The family will greet friends prior to the service from 3:00 – 4:00 pm at the Church.
