T. Sgt. Clarence E. Gibbs, age 21, died in service to his country on December 29, 1944 in Kamp-Bornhofen, Germany.
He was born in Charlotte, NC, on September 7, 1923, and was the son of the late Rufus Daniel and Lula Mae Harrison Gibbs.
Clarence enlisted into the US Army on February 18, 1943 at Camp Croft, SC. He courageously served his country in WWII in the 368th Bombardment Squadron. He went missing on December 29, 1944, after his aircraft was hit during a bombing mission over Bingen, Germany. Though he survived the initial crash, he was later killed in Kamp-Bornhofen and buried at the local cemetery, where his remains were discovered 81 years later.
He is survived by his great-nieces and nephews, Anne Gillespie, Cindy Sanders, Tommy Merck, Ray Hamilton, Rebecca Edwards, Romona Weeks, and Norma Jean Avinger.
Clarence preceded his parents in death, along with his sister, Mildred Gibbs Brown; his nieces and nephews, William (Billy) Brown, Edith Avery, Ronald Brown, and Barbara Merck; and his great-nephew, Jimmy Merck.
The family extends an invitation to all Veterans, service members, and the public who would like to pay their respects to T. Sgt. Gibbs. Gray Funeral Home of Clinton will be open Monday, July 21st – Friday, July 25th from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
Graveside services with Full Military Honors will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 26, 2025 at Pinelawn Memory Gardens, where he will be laid to rest by his sister.
For those attending the service who may be unable to stand for a prolonged period, please bring a chair.
