Billy Ray Hughes

Billy Ray Hughes age 81 and widower of Evelyn Hughes his wife of 59 years passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at VIA Health Hospice in Clinton.

He was born on January 25, 1945 in Gray Court, South Carolina and was one of twelve children of the late Rev. Robert Hughes and the late Sally Worthy Hughes. Bill was a former employee of Laurens Mills and retired from John D. Hollingworth of Mauldin as a machinist. He was a member of the Fountain Inn Church of God. He enjoyed fishing, raising pigeons, chickens and gardening, especially growing tomatoes.

Bill is survived by his son, Pastor Jamie Hughes (Christina); his daughters, Traci Hughes and Ashley Holcombe (Tim); his six grandchildren that called him “Papa Bill”, Amanda Alvarez (Scott), Josh Hughes, Nick Hughes (Cheley), Alex Hughes, Samantha Altemeyer (Jimmy), Billy Holcombe (Whitney); his five great-grandchildren, Emryn Hughes, Logan Altemeyer, Jaxson Altemeyer, Riley Altemeyer and Jonah Altemeyer, his brother, Paul Hughes (Ginger) and his sister, Mary Jane Hughes.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026 at Fountain Inn Church of God at 3:00 PM with Rev. Dr. Eddie Allen officiating. The family will greet friends at the church from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM. Burial will follow at Highland Home Baptist Church Cemetery in Gray Court.
